Movies to Die For: The Aughts

Much like the 70's, the turn of the century dealt a significant blow to American Life.  In the aftermath of the horrific attacks on September 11, 2001, we see a nation in pain.  A people trying to find their voice and regain their identity.  Horror is not doing well at the box office.  The public doesn't want to be reminded of their pain.  There is a significant bid to ban horror all together.  Again, our monsters change. Of course there are some stand out films, if you're looking...

American Psycho - 2000
Battle Royale - 2000 (This Japanese film felt to me, like the intellectual precursor to The Hunger Games. FAR more violent and creepy, but if you watch you'll get my meaning)
The Others - 2001
Session 9 - 2001
Ichi the Killer - 2001
Donnie Darko - 2001 (this is easily one of my favorite films of all time, so lovely)
The Devil's Backbone - 2001 (this might be my favorite Del Toro film)
Cabin Fever - 2002 (This film redeemed Eli Roth for me..I HATED Hostel so. so. so much. I'm happy I saw Cabin Fever AFTER I saw that abomination)
28 Days Later - 2002 (masterpiece, hands down)
Ju-On: The Grudge - 2002
May - 2002
High Tension - 2003
House of 1000 Corpses - 2003 (I. Love. Rob. Zombie)
Shaun of the Dead - 2004 (so funny, so wonderful, so appropriate for people who may not love horror)
Dawn of the Dead - 2004 (you give me a zombie baby any time.  I'm in.)
Dead and Breakfast - 2004 (comedy. tons of gore. brilliant film.)
Wolf Creek - 2005
The Devil's Rejects - 2005 (I. Love. Rob. Zombie!!)
Taxadermia - 2006 (I'm going to warn you...EXTREME body horror. Tough stuff)
Slither - 2006
Inside - 2007
Halloween - 2007 (I know this movie is a bit controversial for purists, but I loved it)
30 Days of Night - 2007
Grindhouse - 2007 (Death Proof over Planet Terror, but both are solid)
Teeth - 2007
Let the Right One In - 2008 (Do yourselves a favor and skip the remake, this Swedish original is so beautifully made)
Antichrist - 2009 (Lars Von Trier. This is tough, guys. It's worth it if you can get through it)
Drag Me to Hell - 2009
Daybreakers - 2009 (low budget, original, pretty damn great)
Zombieland - 2009

There you have it, folks.  Join me tomorrow as we wrap up our little journey with titles from the last six years!  For now, take a look at Dead and Breakfast!
